But it looks like the series’ first foray into making games specifically for VR - something that could provide a very different experience than adding headset support to a non-VR game. This isn’t quite the Resident Evil 4 remake that fans have called for, and non-VR users may still want to focus on a fan-funded remaster of the original game. (While it’s not clear whether Resident Evil 4 will also support the original Quest, Oculus has pushed to make Quest games compatible with both headsets in the past.) But this is the first full Resident Evil game that seems specifically designed for VR - and specifically for Facebook’s standalone Oculus Quest 2. Capcom also released a VR-only demo for that game. The 2017 first-person game Resident Evil 7 let you play through the entire game with a PlayStation VR headset, which made the game arguably scarier but also more difficult to play. The Resident Evil series has tried VR before. Oculus and Facebook Reality Labs will reveal more about the game on April 21st, when Facebook is holding its own VR showcase for the Quest. While Capcom didn’t offer much detail, some early footage shows a first-person adaptation of the classic third-person shooter.Ĭapcom announced its news during a Resident Evil showcase that also included a new trailer for the non-VR Resident Evil Village. Resident Evil 4’s VR remake will be a collaboration between series publisher Capcom, Oculus parent company Facebook, and the independent studio Armature. While this mod isn’t yet available to download, we shouldn’t have to wait too long, since it can be released “as soon as the RT Shader from Pascal Gilcher is out of the beta stage and free for all”, and the RT Shader beta is already on stage 0.92, not too far from a full release.Resident Evil 4 will be rereleased in virtual reality on the Oculus Quest 2 headset. So no worries on the atmosphere front, either. In fact, Massihancer has said that he “tried to improve the horror game atmosphere with a warmer colour grading, mostly in the indoor sections of the Police Station”. One worry I had was that his staple graphical modding style wouldn’t suit a horror game, but, judging from the demonstration YouTube video, it suits it just fine. Until then, though, you might want to give Massihancer’s mod a try. A reticle will appear once the weapon is aimed, which will become smaller when aimed for a short period of time while not moving. The player must first equip a weapon via the inventory to aim it at the desired targets. In other words, it’s seeming like DXR ray tracing and other such high-tech graphical goodies might become more run-of-the-mill over the next year or two. Resident Evil 2 remake uses an over-the-shoulder third person perspective, where the player can freely-aim their weapon while moving the camera angle accordingly. While Sony obviously won’t be running DX12 U on its PS5, the Xbox Series X and PC should share some DX12 U cross-compatibility. These GPUs will be based on the RDNA 2 architecture which will also appear in the upcoming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles as ‘custom’ AMD GPUs. Plus, with AMD Navi 2X GPUs heading our way later this year, and with these GPUs supporting ray tracing, we can be sure that DX12 U’s features will be utilised more and more as time goes on. Finally, one major thing I would change in this game is the map system. Although DX12 U is more of a re-brand than something entirely new, having a new spec that includes DirectX Raytracing (DXR) 1.0 and 1.1, variable rate shading, mesh shaders, and sampler feedback, means that game devs should be more inclined to make use of these features. Resident Evil 2 has VHS tapes but doesn’t have that freedom to actually play out what’s going on in the TV and it would’ve been interesting to be able to do something like that perhaps in a future DLC this story framing will take place in a similar fashion. Now that Microsoft has announced DX12 Ultimate (DX12 U), we should hope for better DX12 performance in games than the Resident Evil 2 remake gave us.
